Join the National Wildlife Federation Gulf Program and UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota Sea Grant staff for a morning of learning and exploration focused on community resilience, flooding, mangroves, and the connections that link healthy ecosystems to healthy communities.
We’ll begin with an engaging presentation how Florida communities can better prepare for flooding and how nature-based solutions can be part of the answer. Then we’ll take the learning outside with an exploration of Lemon Bay Park, where we’ll get an up-close look at mangrove communities and the many ways healthy coastal ecosystems support resilience.
Note: Light morning snacks and refreshments provided.

Details:
Join us for an engaging morning exploring what it means to build community resilience in a place shaped by water. We’ll begin with a presentation at Lemon Bay’s Education Center classroom, Community Resilience: Living With Water. We will explore how Florida communities can better prepare for flooding and how both people and nature can play a role. We will look at the different types of flooding that affect our communities, and how infrastructure, nature, planning, and community knowledge can work together to reduce risk.Following the presentation, we’ll head outside at Lemon Bay Park for an exploration focused on one of Florida’s most important coastal ecosystems: mangrove communities.Together, we’ll explore the mangrove shoreline and look at how these remarkable ecosystems interact with water and the surrounding landscape. We’ll consider how mangroves can help slow water, reduce wave energy, stabilize shorelines, trap sediment, and provide important habitat for fish and wildlife. As we explore, we’ll connect what we see on the ground back to the ideas introduced during the presentation.
This experience is designed to leave you with a better understanding of the challenges our communities face, the natural systems that help us, and the many ways people + nature + infrastructure can work together to create a more resilient future.
