Scratchboard Art

About this event

Study Scratchboard art with Victor Gartner at the Visual Arts Center (VAC). Scratchboard is an illustration technique in which artists scratch or engrave into a thin layer of white China clay that has been coated with dark, usually black, India ink. Using sharp knives, needles , and other specialized tools, the artist removes the dark surface layer to reveal the white clay beneath, creating images through lines, textures, and contrasts. As you work with scratchboard, you can explore a variety of etching techniques to produce different effects, from fine details and shading to bold highlights and dramatic textures.
